A wonderful and very fun read.
The Zombie Survival Guide takes you into the world of the undead. Written in the style of a regular survival manual, The Zombie Survival Guide is far from regular. Brooks starts off by talking about the origins of the zombie menace. It explains what causes the dead to rise, the name of the virus and much more useful information. Brooks really tries to make you believe that this is the real cause of the zombies and this is how they function. It is all written in humor, that's why you will find this book in the humor section but zombies are far from funny.
This is a hard book to review since there really is no plot and no characters. It is a lot of fun though. You'll learn survival tips for surviving a zombie outbreak. The book discusses the correct weapons to defend yourself and the ones to distance yourself from. Many more interesting bits of information like how to identify the warning signs of an early zombie outbreak and what to do once you find yourself facing the undead.
The Zombie Survival Guide is also available as an unabridged audio book. It is put out my Random House Audio, and read by Marc Cashman, who does a great job. He reads the book with as much of a straight face as it was written. The audio book runs at 8 hours and 38 minutes, it is rather long but it will keep you entertained. I'll add a link to the end of this review.
Overall The Zombie Survival Guide is a great read, very smart, very funny and well thought out. Max Brooks is a genius when if comes to zombies in literature. I give The Zombie Survival Guide 4 Undead Heads out of 5.

Fun read. Quick and easy. The survival guide portion of the book gets a bit tedious but i understand the authors intentions. I have seen these guides in various forms in my local subversive book stores, and i can happily say i will never have to read one. The book takes off in the last chapters with the case studies. Apparently this is where WWZ starts? Whatever, grab it if your fascinated by the prospect of a zombie apocalypse.

In the Zombie Survival Guide, it is apparent that Mr. Brooks intended to create a humorous work. The intent of it seemed to be to satire the zombie genre with a field guide to zombies that takes itself far too seriously. Unfortunately, there is little comedy to be found here. The book is intentionally written in a dry, droning style. Unfortunately, while this was intended to be funny, it results in the book being utterly boring. The problem with the book is that it is a satire of nothing. It does not mock the zombie movies it takes its inspiration from, as sections on what not to do (for example use chainsaws) have the humor value of someone who watches a slasher and remarks on the stupidity of the victims: that is to say, it points out the obvious as if it has found something incredibly clever, something that has evaded the rest of the viewers' feeble minds. Of course, in reality the rest of us have chosen to ignore the glaringly unrealistic elements. The "recorded attacks" are Mr. Brooks' attempt at writing straight-up fiction, of course in the same manner as the rest of the book. The results are below most fan-fiction. These are written in the same dry style as the rest of the book, and lack any cohesion as stories. Despite this, they are a step up from the "manual" segments of the book, and as such are its highlights. In short, this book fails at any form of satire; I would encourage zombie fans to look elsewhere for their fix.

If you're into the zombie genre, I recommend this book. Weapons, zombie extermination, and defenses are some of the subjects covered in this book. There seemed to be a couple of contradictions regarding the zombie's abilities, it's just technical stuff, but I'm picky like that.
I am looking forward to reading Mr. Brooks actual stories. My eleven year old son liked this book too.
