Let us begin with two words: "Nazi zombies." Let us add two more: "Hitler's gold." Yes, it's true. These are the elements of Dead Snow, a Norwegian horror picture that unleashes an undead blitzkrieg across an otherwise inviting winter landscape. The five vacationing med students who have blundered into this backcountry in search of fun have no idea that their actions will draw the attention of the aforesaid zombies of the Third Reich (what these reanimated corpses are doing in the mountains of Norway will be explained in good time). It would be nice to report that Dead Snow lives up to the outrageousness of its concept, but far too much of this thing is taken up with standard-issue slasher tropes: self-conscious dialogue about the plot's resemblance to an Evil Dead scenario, gross-out moments for their own sake (a sequence in an outhouse is especially regrettable), and decidedly uneven acting. The movie earns a few points for a grabby nighttime opening sequence and its unhealthy devotion to the art of entrails stretching (which, when it comes to people hanging off snowy cliffs, can have practical applications you probably never even thought about). The enthusiastic mayhem can't be denied, so if a sheer body count is your yardstick, Dead Snow comes across. But given the proximity of Nazi gold and the possibilities suggested by Hitler's minions returning from their snowy graves, this movie disappoints. --Robert Horton

1 out of 5 stars NO   August 23, 2010

NO! Don't waste your money on this nonsense. It is beyond stupid, beyond phony-looking, it's one of the worst horror films ever made. I really hated it. Take every stupid cliche, from every really stupid slasher-movie, the dumbest college kids who ever lived, the lamest looking and acting zombie horde ever to blunder around in the snow, uncannily bad makeup and props, ( and one truly unforgivable scene of sex on an out-house seat ) ..., and all I could say to myself is "WHEN will this be OVER!?". Some movies are made as satire, meant to be humorous pokes at the genre..., and I can also appreciate those types of films as well... but THIS didn't cut it that way either. It was so putridly bad in every way that I couldn't even laugh at it. Bad bad bad bad. If you are in the mood for a good killer-zombie flick, then go watch ( or re-watch...)John Carpenter's THE FOG.

Norwegian film makers get it. This is how to make a cool movie; balance the humor and horror, special effects that don't over power the movie, and most importantly: actors that care what they are doing and do it well!. The story revolves around a bunch of medical students getting away for some rest and relaxation during the Easter break. Unknown to them, they've set up camp at the absolute wrong place. Back in the day, Nazi's used these hills for an escape route or safe haven and it's said that this is where they supposedly holed up and eventually died. Well, they're not all that dead. Our medical students eventually meet these flesh eating Zombie Nazis and the red stuff starts flowing. A mad dash for survival ensues, and it all ends up being a 'hail' of a lot of fun, there's chainsaw action, decapitations, rope pulling with intestines, axe murders, machine gun concerts and disembowelment. The effects are top-notch in spite of the obvious budgetary restrictions, and the make up art on the zombies is very impressive. The rotting uniformed corpses look quite menacing, especially their leader. The snowy landscapes were beautiful picture to behold, although it's even more amusing to see the white snow color red with blood! Tommy Wirkola is a clearly talented director and hopefully a promising long career awaits him. The flick however isn't perfect as it suffers from small horror clichés, like dumb decision making. But at the same time, they handle these clichés in a somewhat refreshing manner. Some cheap scare tactics with classical music are used early on to get you on edge, but those are barely used later on, when violence and creative gore take hold. Dead Snow really surprised me. I wasn't expecting such a fun flick and the characters were all well-fleshed out, the dialogue well-written and funny, the gore aplenty, the horror nods abundant and awesome (Braindead t-shirts?!), and even the score and soundtrack were good. This should become a pretty big hit for horror fans, well I hope so anyways.

2 out of 5 stars Heil 'Død snø'!, Say what?   August 15, 2010

OK First THIS MOVIE IS NOT IN ENGLISH.

Yeah I know it is mentioned in the fine print but it cost me $17 to find out. I mean, Take a look at the case. Everything on the case is in English and without my reading glasses I would never know the movie wasn't. So I'm trying to watch it and the subtitles are small, poorly placed, and the yellow color all conspire to make it unreadable. Which may be just as well because knowing what the characters are saying doesn't help the movie much.

I don't believe in slamming a movie because it is in a language I don't understand because I bought it on impulse without research. It is just a bad movie.

The two high points were the opening menu with the blinking eyes on the disembodied Hitler head and when I threw the piece of crap movie in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Nazi Zombies need I say more?   August 4, 2010

This is a campy horror fest that you have to see! It took the classic creature the Zombie and almost put it in the shoes of slasher kings such as Jason. Even though there are multiple zombies they pull off a almost "Friday the 13th" feel when the killing starts. It is a B movie and makes no claim to be anything more. Between the humor and the gore it has a decent story and classic horror feel. I highly recommend this movie rent it first if you are a movie buff that can't deal with B movies but I assure that you will buy it after you have seen it start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars For all Zombie film lovers! Original Nazi Zombies!   July 2, 2010
Touch of Class
This in my opinion was a very original Zombie film. It had all you would expect with an added twist... Humor! :) Friends go to a remote cabin in the woods yeah yeah yeah. However this time it becomes known to them that Nazi's, the most cruel occupied this land during the war and when the townspeople had enough they killed them...Or so they thought. Now armed with Chainsaw, power tools etc to protect themselves the friends must fight off the Nazi's that have come back for revenge in the form of Zombies! I thought this film was very well made and filmed and the Zombies were super cool! I also liked that they used not super models for the cast but average to nerdy type people. Fun and entertaining! Thanks for reading :)
