4 out of 5 stars Who knew that a simple headshot could take 5 hours?   February 12, 2010

I had been eying this game for years til I finally bought the first set and tried it out. It's a very fun board game of kill or be killed. Each turn you can draw cards that have negative effects for your fellow 'survivors' or give you special weapons to fight the ever growing zombie population. Each turn you also reveal a pathway throughout the city with hospitals, hardware stores, army surplus stores ect where you can pick up extra weapons and health.

You're goal is to either be the first to find the helipad and escape or be the first to kill 25 zombies. You have very limited life and can easily die but you start over at town square every time you do. The game is long and difficult but, challenging and fun even when your opponents have just put 10 more zombies right in front of you. Each expansion makes it harder and longer but the game is still very fun, and like the recent movie release says, "Welcome to Zombieland."

4 out of 5 stars Before the movie ZombieLand there was this game   February 6, 2010

Did you enjoy the movie Zombieland but just felt it didn't really give you that personal: "Oh my God how do I escape from being eaten by a Zombie experience?" (why you would WANT that experience I won't ask) Then Zombies!! is the game for you.

Players find themselves trapped in a complex trying to get to the heliport to escape, however your path is blocked by the living dead. LOTS of them. As in the movies they are slow and easy to kill, also like in the movies one Zombie isn't much trouble, but the seer volume makes it a challenge to make it to the end without being lunch.

Like the Steve Jackson Games Munchkin Quest your map is built as you go along so you have to find your way around. It also has an element of Cutthroat Caverns in that you need to cooperate to survive but since the first player to the Heliport wins (unless you just want to win with the 25 kill rule)you need to slow down your friends a little.

It is an easy game and a great one to introduce people who don't play board games to the genre.

The one weakness of this game can be its length, it can go on VERY long time and can eat up an evening, but with that caveat it is certainly a fun game, particularly with a large crowd, and enough variants and expansions exist to keep you rolling in rotting flesh for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, but shallow   February 1, 2010

The best and easiest way to describe Zombies!!! The Board Game is the following: it's like a board game version of Left 4 Dead...if you were really trying to leave your friends for dead. Right now, there's really three board game versions of the zombie apocalypse that offer three completely different experiences. Since this was the cheapest (and one of the only ones still in stock at the time), I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. I've played it a couple times now and, while it is a good time, it's kind of an uneven experience.

The game is really easy to learn, which is a plus. In order to up the replayability and the randomness, Zombies!!! doesn't have a set board game. Instead, you have individual board pieces that you lay down during the game, creating a different city each time you play. The game can be won, one of two ways: the first person to kill 25 zombies automatically wins, or, when the helipad game piece is ultimately put down, the first person to get to the helipad wins.

Round go like this: the player flips over a game board piece, puts it wherever it can legally fit (connecting roads, etc.) and puts the number of required zombies on it; then the player rolls the die and moves up to that number of squares, fighting any zombies they come across; finally, the player rolls the die again and moves that number of zombies one square each. Some game board pieces are named buildings (like the skateshop or a sporting good store) which contain more zombies and some health and bullet pieces. When you get into combat with the undead, you roll the dice and have to get a four to a six to kill it (or spend bullets to get bump up your roll, or spend a health token and reroll). Finally, event cards add a bit of unpredictability to the game. Event cards can screw up the other players by making them unavailable to move, force them to move in a certain direction, etc. They can also help you by giving you additional ammo, guns, or allow you to move freely without fighting zombies, for instance. That's basically it.

Here's the problem, though: the game is either too long or too short. Too long because there's almost no real tension in the beginning. Zombies are being added, sure, but we mostly moved around without much purpose, killing zombies as we passed them. It wasn't until the helipad was put down that the action and tension really hit the fan. At that moment, everyone started gunning for the helipad and the claws really came out. We threw down cards to royally screw with each other and the game was a real nail-biter up to the very last minute. But that was maybe the last fourth of the game. There really wasn't much of a build up; we simply went from having no purpose to rushing frantically to the final spot.

On the other hand, it might have been too short. Some of the cards and concepts that come into play are in the named buildings, which contain the most supplies (health and bullets) but also brings some event cards to life. Some cards you can only use in specific stores. For instance, you can only put the skateboard event card (a weapon and a movement modifier) into play when you're inside the skateboard shop. An ammo/gun card can only be placed in play if you are at the sporting goods store. Randomness factors in because you don't know when or where the card will be played, resulting in some games where you're nowhere near the store or, more infuriating, the store is placed right before the helipad, making it a moot point. Most of the time, these stores were placed on the opposite side of the board and by the time you could actually start moving in that direction, the helipad was placed in play. And when that happens, why would you waste your turn trying to move half way across the board when everyone else is moving towards the finale? If there were more turns before the helipad was put into play, allowing you to move about town and try to actually accomplish something, then it'd make some of the named buildings/event cards more useful.

As it is, I'm not sure which the game is (too short or too long), but I did have fun. I just wish there was more of a point to the beginning portion; or that there was more time to move around the map, get weapons, etc. It's not until the final climax of the game that things get interesting...but don't get me wrong, when that moment happens, when the helipad is put in play, your friends turn into your most bitter enemies and it gets hysterically fun, funny and intense.

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Board Game - for the Gamer or Horror Fan   November 27, 2009

Zombies!!! is that rare game that actually lives up to the hype. Before I purchased this game, I did quite a bit of reading about it and finally decided to buy a set. I wasn't disappointed. Zombies!!! is a fast-paced board game that is easy to set up and play (you can play it out of the box with just a couple minutes of prep), but the gameplay itself can become very absorbing - you'll be amazed at just how much fun you'll have.

Here's the concept: like any zombie movie, your city is filled with the walking undead. You and a few other people have survived, and you have two objectives: either make it to the Helipad and safety, or try and destroy 25 zombies. However, there can be only one survivor, and you and the other players have to resort to treachery in order to win.

This game comes with map tiles, 100 zombies, 6 human figures, 2 six-sided dice, a deck of Event cards, a rulebook, and a host of ammunition and life tokens.

Zombies!!! doesn't have a set board; instead, this set comes with a number of sturdy map tiles that are placed on each player's turn, creating a board that changes each time you play. Once placed, each tile is then set up with a set number of zombies and (if it is a "building" tile) additional life and ammunition tokens which are spent when you roll the dice to kill zombies if your die rolls aren't good enough (when you land on a square occupied by a zombie, you have to roll a 4, 5 or 6 to destroy them). If you lose all of your life tokens, you have to start over at the City Square tile.

What really makes this game great, however, are the Event cards - these can be anything from a Chainsaw that grants you additional attack abilities, to situational cards that can either help you or drive your opponent(s) absolutely insane. While there is a tactical quality to the game as it is, the Event cards lend it that extra level of unpredictability. This is truly a game where your fortunes can turn on a dime; I had a game where one of my opponents was absolutely sure he was going to win (and told us so) - he had a plan all worked out. But a couple of well-placed Event cards brought his strategy down around his ears and he lost to the very player he was planning to demolish. Even if you start out slow or just can't seem to get an edge over other players, you're literally just one die roll or card draw away from potential victory. This game can get super competitive but, most of all, super fun.

The game comes in a sturdy box that is suitable for storing all of the pieces and cards, and even has room for extra zombies and expansions (though not too many). I highly recommend immediately adding an extra Zombies!!! Bag o' Zombies, as well as the Zombies!!! 3.5: Not Dead Yet expansion; the bag of zombies will come in handy while playing, because it is possible to run out, which is never good. Zombies 3.5 is an all-Event card expansion that has some amazingly fun and unpredictable cards and will without a doubt add a great dimension to your game. Neither of these extra items is too pricey and both are of good quality.

I recommend Zombies!!! for anyone who is 1) A fan of zombie movies, the Resident Evil video games, etc. 2) A board game nut 3) A gamer of any stripe. One of the great features of this game is that, not only are there a large number of official expansions available (sewers, a mall, a mountain setting, an abandoned army base, etc.) but people also customize the rules to suit their own play styles. There are endless possibilities for this game, and it excites the imagination. I hope you have fun!
