Gameplay Plants vs. Zombies is a tower defense strategy game, in which the player's goal is to stop their enemies, in this case zombies, from advancing across the game map and eventually invading their in-game house. This is done by using the variety of different plants available. Each of these possesses different attributes that make them effective against enemies both in a general sense, but also in some cases in a very specific ways against specific zombies. This is becasue zombies, like the plants, have specific attributes as well which can be equated to strengths and weaknesses. The strategy element of gameplay regards how players match these strengths and weaknesses across the game map and how they manage their plant resources overall. As part of managing these resources, players must also constantly seek to upgrade their plant arsenal. This is done by purchasing upgrades with money collected from fallen zombies, as well as rewards earned through success in the game's various gameplay modes.
Game Modes Along with its fun-filled adventure mode, Plants vs. Zombies also comes with additional gameplay modes that are sure to keep the fun coming. Awesome Game for anyone!August 17, 2010 M. Thompson(Chicago, IL USA) What I love the best about this game is that it can appeal to several people who play games at different levels. I'm a big fan of the Pop Cap games and similar "types" of games but my boyfriend is more into the more advanced and difficult games that he plays. BUT we both love this game equally and we both found it challenging. It's really a very funny game to play because of the way the zombies act and react to various situations. It's challenging and it's fun. My only complaint is that it is not longer and that they haven't made a sequel of some kind yet!
BEST GAME EVER!!!August 1, 2010 Ann M. Gadel(Titusville, FL USA) This is the best video game I've ever played. I played the trial version and it was so much fun I just had to buy the full version!!! The full version has 50 levels,40 different plants, and 25 different types of zombies, plus the mini-games and puzzle sections. There is also the Zen Garden, where you can grow plants. You earn 'coins' and free plants when you kill zombies. You can use the 'coins' to buy fertilizer for your plants and when they are full grown you can sell them back for lots of 'coins'. Then you can use the coins in the shop to buy extras, such as the 'gatling peashooter' to help you fight off those pesky zombies. If you complete all fifty levels, be sure to watch the zombie music video at the end--it's really cool!!! If you're in the middle of a game and have to quit, it will save your progress and pick up where you left off. The background music is really excellent, which makes the game all the more fun. IF YOU LIKE VIDEOGAMES, YOU GOTTA BUY THIS ONE FOLKS!!!!!
PopCap Delivers a Great Experience for Regular and Casual Gamers Alike!July 24, 2010 Nate is my fake name(MA, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
PopCap, well known for their "casual" games, proves that they can make an outstanding tower defense game appropriate (and fun) for all ages.
Graphics (4):
While this game is not graphically taxing, it still looks fantastic. I think that, more than looking "realistic", it is important for a game's look to fit its theme and its feel. PvZ achieves this. The graphics are cartoony and colorful, much like you might expect a real garden to be. As they take damage, the zombies visibly degrade. This includes denting the protective headwear some of them use, to having an arm, and finally their head, pop off.
The variety of plants and zombies is commendable as well. While this is also a gameplay detail, it should be noted that the types plants and zombies are easily identifiable visually, and in some cases audibly as well.
As a note to parents and guardians, there is no blood or gore.
Gameplay (4.5):
It starts out simple, but can become challenging quickly. The "areas" of the game are split into the front yard, the back yard (complete with a pool), and the roof, with day and night levels for each. After completing a level, a new plant becomes unlocked for future use. Each area of the game requires different plant types to be successful.
Every so often, a level will change it up. This includes something that can best be described as "bowling for zombies". You use Wallnuts, which are, naturally, walnut-shaped defensive plants, to kill waves of zombies. There are also levels in which, rather than selecting which plants to use at the beginning, plants are cycled through on a scrolling conveyor belt on the side of the screen. And of course, there is also the simple but fun whack-a-mole styled level, with zombies.
The difficulty quickly escalates, and the constant addition of new zombie types means that you must adapt and position your plants intelligently. There are many general use plants, but certain zombies require certain types of plants to ensure that they are dealt with as soon as possible.
In addition to the normal levels, there are mini-games that can played individually in order to get money, which is used to buy extra plant slots and some more advanced plant types and upgrades.
Bugs, Gltiches, Issues, DRM:
I bought this game on Steam, so I don't know what type of DRM the disc version has. I paid $10. I would rate this game as easily a $15-20 value.
I also purchased this game for my iPod, and it works extremely well on there, too.
The only reason this game is not getting five stars from me is an extremely frustrating issue I ran into. I stopped playing for several months, and when I came back to it my save files had been corrupted. I could play the level I was on, but the game would give me a message that it could not write the save file, and then close. I backed up my save files and reinstalled the game, and it still did not work. I uninstalled the game from my PC and have not tried it since. That said, I still enjoyed it so much that I ended up spending the $3 for the iPod version and beat it on there.
Overall:
Aside from my above-mentioned issue, my wife and I both absolutely love this game. It is cute and colorful, and the descriptions of plant and zombie types are funny, but those are all just details in what is at its core a very well made and enjoyable tower defense game. If cartoon violence does not bother you, this game is an absolute must-have for anyone who enjoys playing games with their children.
4 / 5 Stars
What a wonderful gameJuly 18, 2010 Justin Monckton My boyfriend downloaded this game.. because we were bored.. And I didn't want to play and XBox games.
At first.. He wouldn't move away from the computer, because he liked it soo much. And I thought it was a Stupid game, until I played it. Now we are both hooked. We have separate accounts and compete to get further than the other. It's a great game!!
Fantastic GameJuly 17, 2010 A. DeHart(Vestal, NY USA) A fantastic game that is great for quick play if you only have 15-30 minutes for a break. In some respects it is like a tower defense game but with limited pathways. The fun part is seeing what upgrades and defenses you'll get and what new zombies will appear in each level.
